Although the book is geared toward young people, it is also designed to support anyone struggling with low motivation or lack of drive. Filled with dozens of engaging exercises and activities, the book centers around 3 guiding principals – aptitude, pleasure, and practice. According to Dr. Bush, “A big gist of this book… is just the beauty and value that there is in collecting experiences and test driving your hypotheses, especially if there are hypotheses about things that might be fun for you or things that might feel motivating for you, or things that you need to just know more about…”

The collaboration between Dr. Bush and Dr. Braaten came about in January 2023 when she approached Dr. Braaten to adapt Bratten’s book, Bright Kids Who Couldn’t Care Less, into a companion guide. She reflected, “I am such a fan of her work and her writing and Bright Kids Who Couldn’t Care Less in particular that I knew that there was something really, really special here and a workbook seems like a really practical way into getting it into more hands and to helping even more kids…” While the book is designed for students to write their thoughts directly onto the pages, it is also available as an e-book which allows readers to complete the activities digitally. Additionally, “This is a book where we fully expect and encourage people to make copies of it… it is our sincere hope that a teacher or a counselor might have this book and then make 20 copies and distribute it to their class so that they can write and fill in. This does, I think, lend itself to individual, therapeutic, and coaching situations, but I think it lends itself to larger group ones too.”[/sdf_text_block][sdf_image id=”sdf-element-1″ module_width=”1/1″ title=”” alt_text=”” image=”https://vch7348tts5.c.updraftclone.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Green-Quote-e1453672031762.png” top_margin=”15px” bottom_margin=”” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” image_alignment=”left” image_size=”sdf-image-md-12″ image_shape=”square” lightbox=”no” link=”” link_title=”” target=”None” nofollow=”no” class=””][/sdf_image][sdf_blockquote id=”sdf-element-2″ module_width=”1/1″ top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”” blockquote_alignment=”left” quote_icon=”yes” quote_icon_size=”fa-lg” blockquote_author=”Dr. Hillary Bush” cite_title=”” cite_link=”” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” class=””]Aptitude – the things that you are good at, pleasure – the things that you enjoy doing, and then practice – the things that you actually spend your time doing.” -Regarding the 3 guiding principals to help teens discover what they love to do.[/sdf_blockquote][sdf_button id=”sdf-element-3″ module_width=”1/1″ top_margin=”10px” bottom_margin=”” button_icon=”fa-hand-o-left” button_icon_position=”icon-left-side” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” button_layout=”left” style=”link” size=”btn-lg” link=”https://www.ellenbraatenphd.com/” target=”_blank” nofollow=”yes” class=””]Learn more[/sdf_button][/sdf_col][sdf_col id=”sdf-col-2″ width=”1/3″][sdf_image id=”sdf-element-0″ module_width=”1/1″ title=”” alt_text=”” image=”https://vch7348tts5.c.updraftclone.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Hillary-Bush.jpg” top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”20px” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” image_alignment=”left” image_size=”sdf-image-md-12″ image_shape=”square” lightbox=”no” link=”” link_title=”” target=”None” nofollow=”no” class=””][/sdf_image][sdf_image id=”sdf-element-1″ module_width=”1/1″ title=”” alt_text=”” image=”https://vch7348tts5.c.updraftclone.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/carolinequotes.jpg” top_margin=”” bottom_margin=”” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” image_alignment=”left” image_size=”sdf-image-md-12″ image_shape=”square” lightbox=”no” link=”” link_title=”” target=”None” nofollow=”no” class=””][/sdf_image][sdf_blockquote id=”sdf-element-2″ module_width=”1/1″ top_margin=”0″ bottom_margin=”” blockquote_alignment=”left” quote_icon=”yes” quote_icon_size=”fa-lg” blockquote_author=”Mark Twain” cite_title=”” cite_link=”” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” class=””]The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”[/sdf_blockquote][sdf_text_list id=”sdf-element-3″ module_width=”1/1″ top_margin=”30px” bottom_margin=”15px” list_content_alignment=”left” list_type=”ul” list_style=”default” list_icon=”no” icon_size=”” entrance_animation=”No” entrance_animation_duration=”” class=””]Writers’ Voices is an affiliate of Bookshop.org.
